Copycat Swiss Dog: A Little Foodie Tribute to My Hood.

I’m a pretty motivated person in general, so I try not to feel guilty when I lay around binge watching a season of something on a drizzling Sunday, which is often my only day off work.

Today was all about cuddling lazy dogs, watching “The Royals”, playing grab ass with the man, and enjoying some greens and lots of laughs. I wasn’t about to stress over some food to write about, so I gave into a craving I’ve been experiencing recently for this easy enough, childhood fave.

It’s the blend of flavors in this that make it fantastic. A juicy, high quality hot dog in a soft bun with a creamy sauce, the bite of Swiss and crunchy sour of the pickle spear. I don’t know. It’s just kick ass to me.

The “Swiss Dog” recipe originates in my home town of Jackson, MI and it can be found in what used to be tiny hot dog stand called “The International Dog House.”

The place has expanded quite a bit since 1984 when I lived 3 blocks away and walked there regularly for dogs and rice pudding. It remains a thriving business due to its unique hot dog toppings and its great staff.

Maybe I’ll do a series on my other 5 favorites that include the Californian, the Beany Weanie, the Mush-Puppy, the Italian and the Maca-Weanie.

We shall see. I don’t eat many hot dogs, but I might be willing to sacrifice in the name of foodie research.

Speaking of research, the creamy and herby sauce they use for this has eluded me for some time. I just could not figure it out. We have a local ice cream stand out here in the sticks that offers a version similar to this, but they come up short with the sauce too.

Plain and simple; when it comes to my favorite foods, if I can’t get the original, I’m going to try making it myself. That was the case this day, and my Babe was off to the store for; wait for it…

FRENCH ONION DIP!!

Now, I can’t say for sure what the Dog House uses, but I think it’s a homemade onion dip at this point. At any rate this worked and it made our tummies quite happy.

It takes 6 ingredients and a few minutes.

Check it out.

What You Need:

Hot dogs

Buns

Swiss cheese

FRENCH ONION DIP!! Seriously!!

Pickle spears sliced in half lengthwise

Finely diced sweet onions

What You Do:

C’mon, MAN!! You don’t need any damn instructions for this!!

See y’all next week. Drop a comment if you want to see recipes for my other 5 favorites from The International Dog House.
